The region around Revelstoke in British Columbia is widely acknowledged as one of the premier heliski and heli‐touring destinations in the world. The terrain accessible by helicopter is vast, remote and varied, ranging from old‐growth cedar forests through glaciated alpine bowls to huge tree‐skiing slopes that descend right into the valley. Key zones straddle both the Monashee Mountains and Selkirk Mountains, which lie on either side of Revelstoke and offer dramatically different terrain flavours.
The Skiing
British Columbia’s inland temperate rainforest is rare with only Siberia and Russia having the same climatic ski paradise. These ecosystems stay wet annually and most of the moisture falls as snow as it is strategically positioned between Monashee and Selkirk subranges of the Columbia Mountains.
The mountain itself is a beast with the longest vertical drop in North America, a whopping 5,620 feet (1,703 metres), and one of the longest off-piste ski runs on the planet, The Last Spike, a nine mile descent down the southern flank of Mount McKenzie.
